File your homestead exemption

Posted by Haval Abbas on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018 at 1:49pm.

As a homeowner, you’re entitled to a homestead exemption that will discount the property taxes you’re required to pay on your primary residence.

The filing period is January 1 to April 30, so if you moved in 2017, now’s the time to file. Below are the links to exemption forms.

To apply, you must own and occupy your home as your principal residence as of January 1 of the year for which you’re filing the exemption. For more information, check out the FAQ’s on the Texas Comptroller’s website, and don't wait, as the filing deadline is April 30.

You should receive a preliminary assessment for your home in May or June. If you need help protesting your assessed tax value, contact us. We can help you prepare by providing a list of recent homes sales in your neighborhood.
